Dr. Karena Rother, Owner and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

Hello! I am Karena and I am the founder of Redefine Mental Health & Wellness. I am a Doctor of Nursing Practice and am board certified as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. As a lifelong resident of Hastings, I am intimately familiar with the distinct opportunities and challenges presented by our small town's proximity to the Twin Cities. I have over two decades of nursing experience, and much of my career has been spent helping people struggling with mental health issues.
My goal is to empower patients to lead the lives they desire by identifying treatments that cater to their specific needs. Through careful assessment and collaborative planning, we will develop a sensible treatment strategy that may include TMS, medication, psychotherapy, lifestyle adjustments, nutritional analysis, exercise, and meditation.

**Please NOTE: Dr. Karena is not currently accepting new patients for therapy only services. These services can be booked with therapists Bernie Menge or Kelly Brasher.**

Education and History
I started my nursing journey at St. Catherine University and became an RN in 2001. In 2007, I completed my Bachelor's Degree at St. Scholastica. Upon earning my Master's Degree at Herzing University in 2023, I passed the national board certification to become a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. I recently completed my doctorate in nursing practice at Herzing University.

Hobbies: I enjoy cheering on my teenagers in their various activities, reading, spending time outdoors, traveling, and running.

Bernie Menge, MA, LMFT, ADHD-CCSP
I know that life’s challenges can sometimes feel overwhelming, and my goal is to provide a space where you feel safe, understood, and supported. Whether you’re dealing with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, or trauma, I’m here to guide you on your path toward healing and personal growth.
With a background in marriage and family therapy, I bring a holistic perspective to my work. I understand that our mental health is shaped not just by our inner world but by our relationships and experiences. I work collaboratively with my clients to uncover the underlying issues that may be holding them back, helping them build the tools to face life’s challenges with confidence and resilience. My approach is compassionate, non-judgmental, and rooted in evidence-based practices that support meaningful and lasting change.

Kelly Brasher, MFT
Kelly earned her Bachelor of Science in English Secondary Education from St. Cloud State University. After several years of working with adolescents, she discovered a passion for supporting individuals in a more therapeutic capacity. She returned to school to complete her Master of Arts in Counseling and is currently working toward licensure in Marriage and Family Therapy.

Her approach to therapy is client-centered and holistic, emphasizing the importance of meeting each individual where they are. Kelly believes that building a strong therapeutic relationship is essential to fostering productive and effective sessions. She works collaboratively with clients to address their unique needs and goals, helping them develop insight, resilience, and healthier coping strategies. Kelly utilizes a range of evidence-based modalities, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), family therapy, and couples therapy. She tailors her approach to best support each client’s specific situation.
With a strong background in working with adolescents, Kelly is particularly skilled in supporting this population. She also has experience working with adults, couples, and families. Her clinical experience includes working with individuals affected by depression, anxiety, adjustment disorders, life transitions, chronic illness, and trauma. Kelly is currently pursuing certification in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to further enhance her clinical expertise.

She is able to take most insurance (billing under her supervisor Bernie Menge) with the exception of all Optum products. Individuals with Optum plans such as Medica, UnitedHealthCare, UMR, and UBH can still be seen, we just cannot bill insurance for those services. A cash pay option is available for these plans.
